Chapter transcript
  1. 01:27:14 Dr Woodcock simply stated,
  2. 01:27:16 "I'm not answering the questions about coxiella." The term "gaslighting" comes
  3. 01:27:21 from the movie "The Gaslight," a 1944 film which depicts a woman whose husband
  4. 01:27:25 lies to her by claiming something is not happening when it actually is.
  5. 01:27:30 "And you thought I was being cruel to you,
  6. 01:27:33 keeping people away from making you a prisoner?" "Oh,
  7. 01:27:37 you're the kindest man in the world." Gaslighting is defined
  8. 01:27:41 as manipulating someone using psychological methods into
  9. 01:27:45 questioning their own sanity or powers of reasoning.
  10. 01:27:48 Gaslighting is an insidious way of making a person doubt themselves.
  11. 01:27:52 Gaslighters often claim your memory of events is incorrect.
  12. 01:27:56 They may withhold information,
  13. 01:27:58 pretend to be confused by what you're saying,
  14. 01:28:00 or simply refuse to listen to you at all.
  15. 01:28:03 They may trivialize your concerns or feelings,
  16. 01:28:05 making you feel unimportant or irrational.
  17. 01:28:08 Which leads us to a special category of manipulation known as medical gaslighting.
  18. 01:28:12 Medical gaslighting occurs when doctors,
  19. 01:28:14 nurses,
  20. 01:28:14 and health care workers dismiss symptoms from patients,
  21. 01:28:17 especially female patients.
  22. 01:28:19 Gaslight patients may have difficulty getting additional tests,
  23. 01:28:22 are mocked for "doing their own research," discouraged from obtaining a second opinion,
  24. 01:28:27 obstructed from their own medical records,
  25. 01:28:30 and ultimately feel talked down to by their doctors.
  26. 01:28:33 Take the case of 8-year-old Riley Jones,
  27. 01:28:36 a vaccine-injured girl who we interviewed in 2022.
  28. 01:28:39 "At VCU,
  29. 01:28:40 we had a nurse laugh at us.
  30. 01:28:45 We had a doctor laugh at us.
  31. 01:28:48 We had a nurse tell us that we were crazy.
  32. 01:28:51 A nurse laughed at my mom.
  33. 01:28:55 Why are you treating human beings like this?" "How does it make you feel when the doctors and nurses laugh,
  34. 01:29:01 and you know your mom and dad are worried?" "It makes me mad,
  35. 01:29:06 upset,
  36. 01:29:08 sad.
  37. 01:29:10 But the only thing I know is that it makes me very upset that nobody
  38. 01:29:14 will believe me and just treat it." Gaslighting is typically employed
  39. 01:29:18 by narcissists and those with similar personality disorders.
  40. 01:29:22 What does it say about the practice of medicine that there is an entire category of gaslighting just for doctors and nurses?
