Chapter transcript
- 00:41:14 Financial conflicts of interest in medicine.
- 00:41:17 In 2019,
- 00:41:18 Dr Jason Fung gave a presentation to medical students about conflicts of interest in medicine.
- 00:41:24 His words were highly prophetic.
- 00:41:26 The universities are the most corrupted places in the world.
- 00:41:29 These people are the people that are in the newspaper,
- 00:41:32 they're the ones that are teaching medical students,
- 00:41:34 they're the ones who are teaching the the dieticians,
- 00:41:38 the pharmacists,
- 00:41:40 everybody.
- 00:41:41 These highly,
- 00:41:42 highly corrupted people who don't even know it.
- 00:41:46 The numbers are black and white,
- 00:41:47 they don't lie.
- 00:41:48 We have questions that need answering before we can trust this data.
- 00:41:51 Now here's a question,
- 00:41:52 how much of our science is done badly this way?
- 00:41:56 We depend on editors,
- 00:41:57 the peer-reviewed.
- 00:41:59 Industry payments to editors.
- 00:42:01 Look at the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.
- 00:42:04 On average,
- 00:42:05 each editor is getting $475,000.
- 00:42:11 In that year,
- 00:42:12 these are the people who are arguing to the FDA that drugs should or should not be approved for certain indications.
- 00:42:21 How is it that the New England Journal of Medicine,
- 00:42:23 our top journal,
- 00:42:25 actually allows that?
- 00:42:27 It's so biased.
- 00:42:28 This is why the insiders say evidence-based medicine is largely useless or harmful.
- 00:42:33 Selective publications,
- 00:42:35 you have rigged outcomes,
- 00:42:36 advertorials,
- 00:42:37 people who work for the company who write an editorial for the New England Journal of Medicine,
- 00:42:43 journal editors are on the take,
- 00:42:44 there's publication bias,
- 00:42:46 and then financial conflicts of interest like everywhere.
