Where Are They Now · Profile 02
Anthony Fauci

Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases for 38 years, White House COVID task-force member and Chief Medical Advisor to President Biden.
Claims are labeled Documented, Allegation, Open question or Gap (something the public record does not yet show). An allegation or open question is not a finding of wrongdoing. Bias, advocacy or bad policy calls are not fraud. Fauci has not been charged with any crime.
Who he was in the COVID era
- Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) at NIH for 38 years, until the end of 2022. Documented Source: Georgetown University (June 26, 2023)
- Member of the White House Coronavirus Task Force (Trump) and the White House COVID-19 Response Team, and Chief Medical Advisor to President Biden — the three roles named in his pardon. Documented Source: DOJ pardon warrant (Jan. 19, 2025)
- Associate editor of McGraw-Hill’s Harrison’s Principles of Internal Medicine (an outside position approved while he worked at NIH) and a member of the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation (since 1996). Documented Source: OGE 278e for CY2020, released by Sen. Roger Marshall
In the film
- Epidemic of Fraud uses Fauci clips on hydroxychloroquine (around 00:08:52 and 00:13:50), the remdesivir announcement in the Oval Office (00:52:03; CNBC, Apr. 29, 2020) and “I represent science” (01:03:05; Face the Nation, 2021). Chapters 37–38 (from 01:30:24) cover lab-leak and origins. Documented (what the film shows)
- Narration at 01:30:28: “Anthony Fauci was funding gain-of-function research in Wuhan, China.” The Republican majority of the House Select Subcommittee supports this; Fauci and the House minority dispute it. Allegation (contested finding)
- Full timecodes are in the annotated transcript.
COVID-era money
Federal pay
- Final NIAID salary of $480,654 (2022) — the highest-paid federal employee, and more than the President’s salary — per OpenTheBooks payroll records. Documented (secondary source) Source: OpenTheBooks (Apr. 21, 2025)
- Federal pension: press estimates put it above $350,000 a year. This is an estimate, not a documented figure; OPM does not publish individual annuities. Open question Source: New York Post (Jul. 31, 2026)
Financial disclosures during the pandemic
- McGraw-Hill royalties (Harrison’s): $100,001–$1,000,000 income range on his CY2020 and CY2021 OGE 278e reports. The form gives a range, not an exact figure. Documented Sources: CY2020 278e (Sen. Marshall); CY2021 278e (OpenTheBooks FOIA)
- From those forms, OpenTheBooks estimated household net worth at $7.6M (Jan. 1, 2019) rising to over $12.6M (Dec. 31, 2021), and counted $2,832,876 in 2021 household income, benefits and unrealized gains, including $910,174 in investment gains. Documented (forms are primary; the totals are OpenTheBooks’ analysis — OGE reports only ranges) Sources: OpenTheBooks (Sept. 29, 2022); Forbes (Jan. 15, 2022)
- 2021 Dan David Prize: a $1 million award for public health. Prize rules send 10% to scholarships. Documented Sources: AP; Tel Aviv University
NIH inventor royalties
- NIH records produced under FOIA list 37 royalty payments to Fauci (2010–2021) from Ancell Corp. (14), Santa Cruz Biotechnology (15) and Chiron Corp. (8). NIH withheld the dollar amounts. Documented (counts and payers only) Source: OpenTheBooks (Aug. 9, 2023)
- NIH’s rules: an inventor gets the first $2,000 from a licensee, then 15% up to $50,000, then 25%, capped at $150,000 per inventor per calendar year. Documented Source: NIH Office of Technology Transfer
- On Sept. 4, 2026, a federal court let NIH keep individual inventor-award amounts secret (FOIA Exemption 4, American Transparency v. HHS, D.D.C.). No official figure for Fauci’s personal NIH royalties is public. Documented Source: DOJ Office of Information Policy case summary
- An earlier AP FOIA (2005), as recounted by OpenTheBooks, reported $45,072.82 in Chiron royalties to Fauci between 1997 and 2004, tied to an interleukin-2 AIDS-treatment patent. Documented (secondary source; AP original not yet reviewed)
- At Sen. Rand Paul’s June 16, 2022 hearing, asked whether he had taken royalties from any entity whose grants he oversaw, Fauci said: “You know, I don’t know as a fact, but I doubt it.” Documented (as transcribed by OpenTheBooks)
- Context, not personal income: OpenTheBooks reports that NIAID as an institute took in $690,218,610 in third-party royalties in 2022–2023. Documented (institutional) Source: OpenTheBooks
After government (2023–2026)
- OpenTheBooks reports, from his disclosures, that 2023 household assets rose by more than $3.5M, to just over $15M. Paid speaking for the National Association of Chain Drug Stores, AHIP (keynote, June 13, 2023), WorldQuant, the Japan Medical Congress and Eminent Series (four events); prizes including Columbia’s Calderone ($50,000) and the National Academy of Medicine’s Lienhard ($40,000); continuing McGraw-Hill royalties. Documented (disclosure, via OpenTheBooks) Sources: OpenTheBooks (Apr. 21, 2025); 2023 disclosure PDF
- Memoir On Call: A Doctor’s Journey in Public Service (Viking/Penguin Random House, June 2024). Publishing insiders told the press the advance was about $5M; the publisher has not disclosed it. Allegation (unconfirmed report) Source: New York Post (Jul. 31, 2026)
- $75,000 for an April 2026 speech at the University of Minnesota, per an Alpha News public-records request as reported by the New York Post. Documented (secondary source)
- Taxpayer-funded U.S. Marshals protection after he left government, under a contract reported at about $15M (Jan. 2023–Sept. 2024). FOIA’d records show his separation date as Jan. 6, 2023. Documented OpenTheBooks argues the date was moved to fit the Marshals agreement. Allegation Source: OpenTheBooks (Apr. 21, 2025)
Family
- His wife, Christine Grady, was chief of the Department of Bioethics at the NIH Clinical Center (2024 salary $263,005 per OpenTheBooks). She was removed from that post in April 2025 during the HHS shake-up. Documented Reports differ on whether she was reassigned to the Indian Health Service or let go. Gap Sources: Washington Times (Apr. 2, 2025); NPR (Apr. 7, 2025)
- The film says at 01:40:59: “Anthony Fauci’s wife heads the NIH Ethics Department.” That was true in substance when the film was made; her exact title was chief, Department of Bioethics, NIH Clinical Center. Documented
- No evidence was found that Grady’s role produced any COVID-specific payment to the household. OpenTheBooks raises a conflict-of-interest argument (no nepotism waiver was produced). Open question No ethics finding.
Consequences
- Preemptive presidential pardon (Jan. 19, 2025) covering any federal offenses from Jan. 1, 2014 through the pardon date related to his NIAID, task-force and chief-medical-advisor service. A pardon is not a finding of guilt, and he has not been charged. Documented Source: DOJ Office of the Pardon Attorney
- President Trump said in December 2025 that Biden’s autopen pardons are “void.” Legal experts say there is no mechanism to revoke a delivered pardon, and no court has ruled on it. Allegation (unresolved legal claim) Source: The Guardian (Dec. 2, 2025)
- Federal security detail ended by President Trump (Jan. 24, 2025). Documented Source: AP
- Criminal referrals by Sen. Rand Paul alleging false statements to Congress about NIH-funded gain-of-function work in Wuhan: two to Attorney General Garland (per Paul), re-referred July 14, 2025 to the current Justice Department. Paul said in January 2026 that DOJ had not acted. Allegation No charges. Sources: Senate HSGAC (July 2025); Christian Post (Jan. 14, 2026)
- Subpoenaed Senate hearing, July 29, 2026. Fauci invoked the Fifth Amendment in response to every question; Sen. Paul counted 111 times. Before the hearing, Paul released more than 1,000 pages of Fauci’s pandemic-era journals. Documented Sources: S. Hrg. 119-504 (GPO); CBS News (Aug. 6, 2026)
- In his opening statement, Chairman Paul said the committee had obtained instructions from Fauci to delete communications, including a Feb. 2, 2020 note to Francis Collins: “Please delete this email after you read it.” Paul also cited Fauci’s assistant reporting that she deleted emails. Allegation (the senator’s characterization in the official transcript; the underlying emails have not been independently reviewed here)
- Contempt of Congress: the Senate Homeland Security committee voted 8–5 on Aug. 6, 2026 to hold Fauci in contempt and sent the referral to the Justice Department / U.S. Attorney for D.C., without a floor vote. His lawyer, David Schertler, called it “a crude political stunt.” Documented As of late October 2026 no charge has been announced, and press reports say the effort has stalled over procedure. Open question Sources: CBS News; Wall Street Journal; Washington Post (Aug. 7, 2026)
- House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic, final report (Dec. 2024): the Republican majority concluded a lab leak was the most likely origin and that Fauci “prompted” the Proximal Origin paper. Democrats issued a dissent. A congressional finding, not a legal one. Documented (contested) Source: SSCP Final Report
- HHS Inspector General (Jan. 2023): NIH and EcoHealth Alliance “did not effectively monitor” awards and subawards, including the Wuhan subaward; EcoHealth had $89,171 in unallowable costs. An institutional finding about NIH/NIAID grant management, not against Fauci personally. Documented Source: HHS-OIG A-05-21-00025
Where is he now
- Distinguished University Professor, Georgetown University — School of Medicine (Division of Infectious Diseases), with an additional appointment in the McCourt School of Public Policy. Listed in Georgetown’s 2025–26 bulletin; gave a Georgetown seminar Feb. 24, 2026. Documented Sources: Georgetown 2025–26 Bulletin; Georgetown Faculty Relations; Georgetown Biomedical (Feb. 2026)
- Paid speaker and author (see above). Pardoned for federal conduct from 2014 to Jan. 19, 2025; a Senate contempt referral is pending with the Justice Department. Documented
What the record does not show yet
- Exact NIH royalty dollars — withheld by NIH and upheld in court (Sept. 4, 2026). Only counts and payers are public. Gap
- His Georgetown salary (private university). Gap
- The book advance and federal pension — only press estimates exist. Gap
- The Feb. 2, 2020 “delete this email” document itself, as opposed to Sen. Paul’s description of it. Gap
