  1. 00:13:05 Many Americans have read studies and heard media reports about this drug chloroquine which is an anti-malarial drug.
  2. 00:13:12 It's already approved as the president said for the treatment of malaria as well as an arthritis condition.
  3. 00:13:18 That's a drug that the president has directed us to take a
  4. 00:13:22 closer look at as to whether an expanded use approach to that
  5. 00:13:26 could be done to actually see if that benefits patients.
  6. 00:13:29 And again we want to do that in the setting of a clinical trial,
  7. 00:13:32 a large pragmatic clinical trial,
  8. 00:13:34 to actually gather that information and answer the question that needs to be answered and asked and answered.
  9. 00:13:42 The Chinese study from Wuhan reflected statistically significant improvement in recovery from fever,
  10. 00:13:47 from cough and in pneumonia as well.
  11. 00:13:50 That was not a very robust study.
  12. 00:13:53 It is still possible that there is a beneficial effect but the study that was just quoted on a scale of strengths of evidence,
  13. 00:14:03 that's not overwhelmingly strong.
  14. 00:14:05 It's an indication,
  15. 00:14:07 a hint of it.
  16. 00:14:07 A study released yesterday on hydroxychloroquine is shockingly irresponsible.
  17. 00:14:13 Even the Secretary of Veteran Affairs had to admit the weakness of this study.

  19. 00:14:20 it's not a clinical study.
  20. 00:14:21 It was done on a small number of veterans,
  21. 00:14:25 sadly those of whom were in the last stages of life.
