Fauci Files · Private vs. public
Private vs. Public
Seven places where Anthony Fauci’s private records (his diary, FOIA emails, internal government records) sit next to what he said in public or under oath on the same subject. Each quote is exact, dated, attributed and linked to its source page.
These are juxtapositions, not findings. Nothing here says anyone lied or intended to mislead, and several pairs have a plain explanation: a narrow definition, words written by someone else, or knowledge that changed over time. Each section gives that context too. No court or official body has found that these statements were false.

1. Deleting records
I agree with you. Mike and Bernhard are good people but they really slow things down, particularly Mike Ryan whose main concern is not offending anyone. Please delete this e-mail after you read it.
Mr. COMER. Dr. Fauci, did you ever delete an official record? Dr. FAUCI. No.
Dr. Fauci, did you delete any emails or records related to the Wuhan lab or the origins of the virus? Dr. FAUCI. No, I did not.
The same request appears in other Fauci emails in the same Senate package: to Cliff Lane, Mar 4, 2012, “Please delete this e-mail and then delete from the deleted file.” (record); to Greg Folkers, Jul 20, 2020, “please delete this e-mail after you read it/” (record); and to Greg Folkers, Sep 26, 2009, “Please delete this e-mail after you have read it.” (record; scanned page, read against the page image).
Context that cuts the other way: asking someone else to delete an email is not proof that he deleted records himself, and the 2024 answers are about his own deletions. These emails survived and were produced, so at least one copy was kept. Whether any recipient deleted anything is not shown. At the Senate hearing on Jul 29, 2026 he was asked “Have you deleted, destroyed, or instructed anyone to destroy records after learning Congress was investigating these matters?” and answered “On the advice of counsel, I respectfully decline to answer based upon my rights under the Fifth Amendment to the Constitution.” (question on printed p. 27, answer on the next page; question · answer · ▶ Watch). Invoking the privilege is not evidence either way.
Strong Same subject, his own words on both sides: a private deletion request against a flat sworn “No”. The two are not logically incompatible.
2. Gain of function at the Wuhan Institute of Virology
The paper you sent me says the experiments were performed before the gain of function pause but have since been reviewed and approved by NIH. Not sure what that means since Emily is sure that no Coronavirus work has gone through the P3 framework. She will try to determine if we have any distant ties to this work abroad.
Fauci’s reply, same page, 12:51 PM ET: “OK. Stay tuned.”
Senator Paul, with all due respect, you are entirely and completely incorrect that the NIH has not ever and does not now fund gain-of-function research in the Wuhan Institute of Virology.
Context that cuts the other way: the private words are Auchincloss’s, not Fauci’s, and the same message says no coronavirus work had gone through the P3 framework, which is the definition Fauci relied on in public. His diary on Oct 23, 2021 states that position: “They failed to mention that in that same letter Larry made it very clear that the research did not rise to the scrutiny of P3CO. In other words by our definition, it was not gain of function.” (record). On Nov 4, 2021 he told the Senate “First of all, gain-of-function is a very nebulous term.” (record; no verified video). His 2012–2014 diary uses the term in its broad, everyday sense, for example Jul 17, 2014: “I told them that we were going to re-examine the risk/benefit ratio of doing gain-of-function research in influenza, in particular.” (record).
Moderate Same subject, but the private words are a colleague’s, and the dispute turns on which definition of gain of function is used.
3. Origin: lab vs. natural
He should do this very quickly and if everyone agrees with this concern, they should report it to the appropriate authorities. I would imagine that in the USA this would be the FBI and in the UK it would be MI5.
Like all of us, I do not know how this evolved, but given the concerns of so many people and the threat of further distortions on social media, it is essential that we move quickly.
In the same thread (Ex. 8, p. 3), sent to Collins with Fauci copied, Farrar wrote “On a spectrum if 0 is nature and 100 is release - I am honestly at 50!” and relayed that Mike Farzan “is bothered by the furin site and has a hard time explaining that as an event outside the lab” (record). Those are other people’s views, sent to Fauci.
There was a study recently that we can make available to you, where a group of highly qualified evolutionary virologists looked at the sequences there and the sequences in bats as they evolve. And the mutations that it took to get to the point where it is now is totally consistent with a jump of a species from an animal to a human.
Context that cuts the other way: 11 weeks separate the two, and the Proximal Origin paper was published in between. The Apr 17 remark describes what a study found rather than ruling a lab out. He has since cited the Jan 31 email in public as proof that he kept an open mind (House, Jun 3, 2024, record).
Moderate His own words on both sides, but knowledge changed in between and the public line reports a study’s finding.
4. Proximal Origin and the Feb 1, 2020 call
FYI, this is work that Tony, Jeremy, Larry, and I helped with, but are appropriately not mentioned explicitly in the paper.
Below it, Kristian Andersen to Farrar, Fauci and Collins, Mar 6, 2020: “Thank you again for your advice and leadership as we have been working through the SARS-CoV-2 'origins' paper.” Fauci’s reply on Mar 8, 2020: “Kristian: Thanks for your note. Nice job on the paper. Tony” (record; also Fauci Ex. 22, record).
He sent drafts, but I’m going to jump ahead of you if I might dribble around. I did not edit it. … I did not edit the paper.
Context that cuts the other way: “helped with” and “advice and leadership” are Collins’s and Andersen’s words, and neither says Fauci edited the text. The sworn denial is specifically about editing. On the Feb 1, 2020 teleconference itself, the corpus has the call-setup emails but no private Fauci account of what was said on the call that can be set against a specific public claim, so it is not paired here.
Moderate Same subject, but the private words are others’, and “helped” is not the same claim as “edited”.
5. Masks
The typical mask you buy in the drug store is not really effective in keeping out virus, which is small enough to pass through the material. … I do not recommend that you wear a mask, particularly since you are going to a very low risk location.
The CHAIRMAN. Should we all be wearing masks? Dr. FAUCI. No.
There was this understanding and discussion that the best masks that we used in hospitals were in short supply, and if people did a run on masks and bought them all, that masks would not be available for the people in the medical community who needed them; point number one.
The tension: the private February advice rests on efficacy, while the sworn account of the early guidance puts the shortage first. In his diary on Mar 31, 2020 he wrote: “We probably were too strong in saying masks do not work.” (record).
Context that cuts the other way: his point two in the same deposition answer is that there was then no evidence masks worked outside medical settings, which matches the February email. The diary line shows him changing his view within weeks, and he notes he said so on CNN that morning. The Mar 3 public “No” matches his private advice.
Moderate His own words on both sides, but the later sworn account also lists the efficacy reason.
6. Daszak / EcoHealth
I just wanted to say a personal thankyou on behalf of our staff and collaborators, for publicly standing up and stating that the scientific evidence supports a natural origin for COVID-19 from a bat-to-human spillover, not a lab release from the Wuhan Institute of Virology.
Fauci’s reply, Apr 18, 2020, 11:29 PM ET: “Peter: Many thanks for your kind note. Best regards, Tony” (record).
I have met him once or twice. I would not exactly characterize him as an acquaintance.
I know of him. I wouldn't say I know him.
Context that cuts the other way: one polite reply to a grantee’s thank-you note does not show a personal relationship. In the same deposition (p. 207) he described Daszak as an NIAID grantee whose emails would be let through to him. In his Jan 2024 transcribed interview he said: “If you ask me, do I have a relationship of back-and-forth discussions with him, the answer to that would be "no."” (record).
Weak The private record is Daszak’s words plus a one-line courtesy reply.
7. Lab leak as a “conspiracy theory”
The anti-Fauci stuff continues with individual articles and FOX news continually implying that gain of function research funded by NIAID (which never occurred) was related to escape of virus from Wuhan Institute of Virology. Typical conspiracy theory.
I don’t think the concept of there being a lab leak is inherently a conspiracy theory
Context that cuts the other way: the diary calls a specific claim a conspiracy theory (that NIAID-funded gain-of-function work caused an escape). The 2024 statement is about the general idea of a lab leak. The two are compatible.
Weak Related subjects, but different claims.
Looked at, no pair found
- Private email and FOIA avoidance. Sworn, Jun 3, 2024: “To the best of my recollection and knowledge, I have never conducted official business via my private email.” (record). No private record in the corpus shows him using a private account for official business. The David Morens line about sending things to “Tony on his private Gmail” appears here only as members of Congress quoted it at the hearing, not as a source document, so it is not used.
- Natural immunity. A private note in the diary package, Oct 6, 2020 (PDF p. 388, scanned, read against the page image), says “I, by the way, have actually written the book on natural immunity” (record). No public or sworn statement in the corpus clearly contradicts it; his May 5, 2021 White House presentation compared protection after infection and after vaccination rather than dismissing either (record · ▶ Watch).
- CIA briefing summary, “Friday 4 June” (year not printed; 4 June fell on a Friday in 2021), Senate final hearing package, PDF p. 19: Fauci “was particularly interested in the WlV's work on pangolins” and asked about Vero cell passaging (record). This reads as consistent with his public “open mind” statements, not against them. Parts of the page are poorly machine-read, so only clean lines are quoted (“WlV” is as machine-read; the page reads “WIV”).
Methods and limits
- Corpus: the Fauci Files database (11,253 records): diaries, FOIA emails, Senate intelligence and hearing packages, the Missouri v. Biden deposition and exhibits, the House interview, congressional hearings, White House briefings and NIH releases. Each topic was searched with full-text queries over both his own words and the full record text.
- Every quote was checked by script as an exact match in the record text. Where the PDF page has a text layer it was also checked against that page (exact, or matching once hyphenation or transcript line numbers are ignored). Scanned pages were rendered and read against the page image. Two machine-reading slips were corrected to match the page image: “very” (read as “vey”) and “COVID-19” (read as “CoviD-19”). The Apr 17, 2020 briefing quote was checked against the live archived White House page.
- An ellipsis (…) marks omitted text inside a quote. Times are from the email headers, converted to Eastern time where the header shows UTC.
- Settings follow the Fauci Files labels: private (diary, email, internal record), sworn (the deposition, the 2024 House hearing and the 2026 Senate hearing), public (other hearings and briefings). The Jan 2024 House interview is a transcribed interview.
- Watch links appear only where the record has a verified official video; they open the full hearing or briefing, not a timestamp. The Nov 4, 2021 Senate hearing and the 2024 House hearing have no verified video in the corpus yet.
- Ratings: Strong means same subject, his own words on at least one side, and a direct clash in wording. Moderate means a real tension, but the private words are someone else’s, the claims are not quite the same, or time passed in between. Weak means the topics touch but the claims differ.
- The corpus is what has been released. Redactions and unreleased material may hide context on either side. A juxtaposition is not proof of a false statement or of intent.
